World Robot Olympiad Australia

World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Australia is the Australian leg of the WRO competition. Australian students have the opportunity to participate in one of the world’s leading robotics competitions.

WRO itself, is a not-for-profit organisation that invests all revenue raised from sponsorship back into supporting its mission to promote robotics in STEM education worldwide.

It is the aim of WRO to bring young people from all around the world together to develop their creativity, problem solving skills and other soft skills. This is done through engaging, yet challenging educational robotics competitions.

History

Australia first participated in WRO in 2011 in the WRO Football (Soccer) category. Since that year, this participation has continued, but only in that one competition. A competition under the WRO brand has never been held in Australia and 2020 will offer Australian students their first opportunity to participate in a full WRO competition.

WRO itself, was established in 2004 under the mission statement - “To bring together young people all over the world to develop their creativity, design and problem solving skills through challenging and educational robot competitions and activities”.

It was decided that an annual WRO international final would be hosted by a different country each year. In 2004, the event was hosted by Singapore and twelve (12) countries participated. Now almost eighty (80) countries are participating in the competition with over 32000 teams of students.

International finals have been hosted in: 2004 Singapore; 2005 Bangkok, Thailand; 2006 Nanning, China; 2007 Chinese Taipei; 2008 Yokohama, Japan; 2009 Pohang, South Korea; 2010 Manilla, Philippines; 2011 Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; 2012 Kuala Lumper, Malaysia; 2013 Jakarta, Indonesia; 2014 Sochi, Russia; 2015 Doha, Qatar; 2016 New Delhi, India; 2017 San Jose, Costa Rica; 2018 Chiang Mai, Thailand; and 2019 Györ, Hungary. 2020 was affected by the global pandemic and 2021 was staged online with Australian teams participating.
